What Is Christmas All About?

When I was growing up the three things that told me that Christmas time was here was the celebration of my sister’s birthday on December 17th, getting out of school on whatever date it may happen to be and watching the aminated special “A Charlie Brown Christmas” on television.

Throughout the special Charlie Brown expresses his inability to get into the “Christmas Spirit” he is depressed because despite all the trappings of the season he really does not understand what Christmas is all about.

In the dramatic conclusion of the special Charlie Brown ask the question “Does anyone really knows what Christmas is all about?”

Charlie Brown’s best friend Linus van Pelt answers by sighting Luke 2:8-14.  These verses tell the story of Jesus birth.  Three times one is used in these verses that tells us and Charlie Brown what Christmas is all about.  That word is “You.”

Look at the references to the word “You” in the text.

-In verse 10 the Angel says –“I bring you good tidings of great joy,

-In verse 11 we are reminded that “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior which is Christ the Lord.

-In verse 12 we are told this shall be a sign to you that you will find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

The reason for the season it not the tree, the parties, the presents or the Eggnog   Believe or not Jesus in not the reason for season.   The reason for the season is you, the tidings of great joy are for you, the savior born in the city of David is for you.  Jesus was born, Jesus lived, Jesus died, was risen from the dead and will come again all for one reason for you.  For God so loved that world that he gave us Jesus so that you if believed in him you would have everlasting life.

What is what Christmas is all about? God did everything possible to ensure that Christmas is really about you!
